LONDON (AP) — The British government has sanctioned nine individuals and three organizations, accusing them of engaging in "hostile activity" on behalf of Iran, which poses a threat to U.K. and global security.
The Foreign Office announced asset freezes and travel bans as measures against the Islamic Republic's use of criminal proxies for threats and illicit financing that jeopardizes regional stability.
"This package of sanctions directly targets organizations and individuals who threaten security on U.K. streets and stability in the Middle East," said Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. "Criminal proxies backed by parts of the Iranian regime who threaten security in the U.K. and Europe will not be tolerated."
The U.K. has previously sanctioned 550 Iranians and entities, citing involvement in planned and attempted attacks on British soil. Recent intelligence reports indicate multiple Iran-backed plots intercepted by law enforcement.
