Michigan's Autonomous Vehicle Hub Faces Funding Crisis Amid Loan Demands

Michigan's push to maintain its autonomous vehicle research hub has hit a financial roadblock as state officials demand $35 million annually, threatening the sustainability of the project despite recent surpluses.

The American Center for Mobility, a key facility for testing self-driving technology, faces potential closure if the state's loan repayment plan proceeds, endangering thousands of dollars in private sector investments and jobs tied to innovation.

‘This state investment is crucial for securing Michigan’s future in advanced mobility,’ says Sen. Jeff Irwin. ‘The center’s success benefits both the economy and technological leadership.’

Established with a $67 million state infusion, the site now owes over $1.6 million yearly, despite generating modest surpluses just last year—enough to cover operational costs but not the escalating debt.

Industry experts warn that continued financial strain could force the center to scale back experiments, potentially shifting development elsewhere and undermining Michigan’s competitive edge.
