Southern California Mayor Pleads Guilty in Foreign Agent Case
Los Angeles (AP) — A Southern California mayor has agreed to plead guilty to acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government and has resigned from her city position, officials announced Monday.
Eileen Wang, Arcadia's mayor, faces charges of operating as an unregistered foreign agent since her December 2026 inauguration, including disseminating pro-Beijing narratives without mandatory disclosures.
The 58-year-old was elected in November 2026 to a five-member council, with mayoral selection rotating among members.
City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto emphasized in a statement that municipal resources remained untouched during the alleged misconduct.
"This case pertains solely to personal actions occurring after my oath of office," he said.
Federal prosecutors confirm Wang's guilty plea, potentially carrying up to a decade in prison.
"She acknowledges the gravity of these accusations and accepts responsibility for past errors," stated her defense team.
