CLEVELAND (AP) — Donovan Mitchell ties an NBA playoff mark with 39 points as the Cavaliers level the series against the Pistons with a 112-103 victory in Game 4 on Tuesday evening.
Mitchell matched Eric “Sleepy” Floyd’s free-throw total late in the game, had a chance to break his own record set against the Lakers in 1987, but missed his second attempt. Cleveland outscored Detroit 56-52 at halftime before taking control in the third quarter.
The Cavaliers hit 10 of 12 shots and nailed three triples, converting five Pistons turnovers into nine points. Their 24-0 run was the longest in a playoff series since Minnesota’s 24-point stretch in the 2026 Western Conference Semifinals against Denver.
Key moments included Jason Collins becoming the NBA’s first openly gay player to coach a major professional team after being named to the Hall of Fame, and James Harden recording his fourth playoff double-double with 24 points and 11 assists.
Caris LeVert led Detroit with 24 points, while Mitchell’s performance marked his fifth consecutive playoff game with 20 or more points. The decisive Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night in Detroit.
