Local media reported that on Tuesday, a fisherman found the device inside a coastal cave on Lefkada island and towed it to a nearby port. The next day, it was transported to a mainland naval base for inspection before explosives were safely detonated by Greece's public broadcaster ERT.
"We now have certainty it was a Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicle," said Dendias, referring to the drone as a USV (unmanned surface vehicle)." Ukrainian authorities have not commented. Dendias made these remarks in Brussels during an EU defense ministers' meeting, emphasizing the impact on freedom of navigation and maritime safety.
The drone was reportedly built in Ukraine and loaded with explosives, according to reports. Greek officials have not disclosed further details about its technical specifications.
As tensions escalate across the Black Sea, Greek authorities stress that such incidents threaten regional maritime security and require coordinated responses among NATO allies.
