BOGOTA – (AP) – At least one person was killed and several others injured by an explosion at a home in Cauca – in what authorities describe as an attack by dissidents from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – in a turbulent southwestern department where alleged members of the FARC stored and manufactured explosives.
The explosion occurred in a rural area of Argelia and affected dozens of homes nearby. A video released by the military shows destroyed houses, with wood and metal parts scattered across the ground.
Argelia’s acting Governor Pablo Daza Urrete assured Noticias Caracol that, as a consequence of the explosion, an 80-year-old man died and two children plus six adults were injured by the blast wave. He added that most of the wounded were discharged.
The military stated that the exact number of affected people remains unclear, but they identified the perpetrator as part of the “Carlos Pardo” faction – a splinter group that broke away from peace negotiations with the government in 2026, intensifying attacks with explosives in the southwest.
Authorities claim intelligence reports indicate that the explosive was placed in the house to “prepare motorcycles with explosives” for later transport elsewhere.
